Location Based Services

Location-based services (LBS) employ accurate, real-time positioning of a mobile device to connect end users to nearby points of interest, advise them of current conditions such as traffic and weather, or provide routing and tracking information via wireless devices. This latest technology has great potential to add value to existing or new wireless mobile data services.

 LBS APPLICATIONS AND SERVICES
LBS services and applications cross over all aspects of the wireless market from consumer to business-to-business solutions.

These include workforce management, vehicle and asset tracking, my nearest services, travel aids and even location based gaming and entertainment.

LBS services normally fall into one of the following location service types:

 - ACTIVE SERVICES
An active service requires the mobile handset owner to request or demand a location service. This is done via an SMS message or by dialing a voice number depending on the users mobile network operator. A typical Active service would be a "MY Nearest" type service where the handset owner request information for the nearest bar or cash pint machine.

 - PASSIVE SERVICES
A passive service is where the handset owner gives permission for trusted 3rd parties to locate their whereabouts. These are normal subscription type services such as work force applications or parental tracking services

- Legal Issues
ACTIVE/PULL SERVICES
Active services are where the end-user makes a one-time request from their handset and no further location communication is made with the end user.

Active services are normally used when a user is looking for information relevant to their location such as a where's My Nearest service.

PASSIVE/PUSH SERVICES
Due to the nature of passive services the end user must first give consent to be located using one of the following methods:-

1) Send in an SMS Message or
2) Dial into that service and consent to be located

WHITE LIST SERVICES
White Lists services are mainly used by business services such as work force management where an owner give consent for multiple handsets to be located. Proof of ownership or authority of the listed handsets is required in advance.
