To further accelerate the evolution of text messaging within the wireless industry and assist their customers generate revenue
quicker, Alcatel, Motorola, Siemens and Sony Ericsson today published guidelines that will assist content developers create
the next generation of mobile messaging.
The guideline named "How to Create EMS Services" describes the powerful capabilities of
Enhanced Messaging Service, also known as EMS, and also provides detailed technical information about the available EMS-handsets
from the participating suppliers.
Enhanced Messaging Service adds new powerful functionality to the well-known Short Message Service (SMS) standards and is expected
to be a catalyst that will further advance the texting phenomenon happening around the globe. Network operators are expecting to
benefit from these new services since they utilize existing SMS infrastructure and industry standards, keeping investments to a
minimum while creating an opportunity to generate new revenue.
The GSM Association forecasts that today, there are nearly 1 billion SMS messages sent by mobile phone users per day. As new
EMS capabilities are added to mobile phones, it is expected that messages between users will increase as users have the ability to
add life to SMS text messaging in the form of pictures, animations, sound and formatted text.
The new EMS capabilities, which utilize a familiar user interface and compatibility with existing phones, provide users with new
ways to express feelings, moods and personality in SMS messages. Users will enjoy the collection and swapping of pictures and ring
tones and other melodies, downloading them from the Internet, receiving them in messages, or editing them directly on the phone.
The document published by the manufacturers today illustrates a strong support for EMS as a messaging platform, and its
significant role in mobile messaging. The joint document is intended to show the benefits available to content creators and
service providers because of the breadth and strength of this open standard, and its support by handset manufacturers. The common
approach, being taken by leading vendors, for this open standard is expected to be of benefit to those using, providing, and
creating new wireless messaging services.
