Siemens and Casio MultiMobile prototype

Casio and Siemens have shown their first joint development - the MultiMobile - which will combine the full functionality of a top-of-the-range mobile phone with a state-to-the-art hand-held personal data assistant.

The MultiMobile prototype includes the leading technology of Casio, such as hi-colour touchscreen and high processor performance as well as Siemens' leading wireless GSM technology (Dualband) and Microsofts WinCe operating system (PIM, Multimedia functionality, open platform for various applications).

The MultiMobile is a prototype who shows the feature set but not the final design and form factor.

Features include wireless e-mail, SMS, Internet access (WAP, HTML), mobile telephony via headset, personal information managment linked with communi-cation features, e.g. direct dial out of outlook addressbook and videostreaming (download and playing of MPEG-4 files) by PacketVideo.

PacketVideo is the first company to provide high-quality video over existing wireless networks or even videoconference from any location.

The MultiMobile is the first product in an anticipated complete range of Pocket PCs with multimedia, wireless Internet and mobile phone capabilities to be developed by Siemens in co-operation with Casio that will be capable of connecting wirelessly to Microsoft Exchange Server-hosted information and any wireless Internet and e-mail service as part of an overall end-to-end wireless solution.

With analysts predicting an estimated industry size of 15 million units by year 2003*, Casio and Siemens are aiming to capture a significant amount of worldwide sales for wireless Internet devices with a PDA form factor. The MultiMobile will be targeted at high-end users - business men and women who want as much functionality as possible in a palm-size device.

The MultiMobile will work on today's GSM networks with the potential to work on CDMA networks as well. It will also be able to utilise upcoming high bandwidth mobile radio standards starting with GPRS, evolving up to the third generation, including IMT-2000/UMTS. Capabilities such as fast Internet access video stream and large file messaging will be available with this new highly-integrated device.

Peter Zapf, President, Siemens Communication Devices said, "This is a very exciting time for us at Siemens. We are working hard with Casio and other content providers to provide discerning consumers with the very latest device driven by the convergence of information and communications. We believe the MultiMobile will spearhead the next generation of mobile communication devices."
