GPRS technology for faster data communication
Thanks to the newest WAP 1.2 level of the Wireless Application Protocol
technology, Xenium 9660 enables mobile access to mobile Internet. At the same
time it offers additional measures for highly secure transactions in mobile
e-commerce applications.
Xenium 9660 also incorporates the GPRS
(General Packet Radio Service) communication protocol, which is now being
introduced into operators’ networks.
GPRS Class 4 allows information to be received up to 4 times faster than
conventional data communication. In addition this technology allows both voice
and data communication and GPRS offers an ‘always on’ connection in which
users are charged for the amount of data transferred, independent of the time
they spend connected.
Other advanced communication functions of Xenium 9660 include PC synchronization
which makes it possible to synchronize phone books and diaries between the
mobile phone, PC and compatible PDA devices. The synchronization is possible
either through IrDA, Bluetooth or a plug and play cable. The infrared port for
data transfer between the phone and a compatible PC eleminates the need for
cable connections.
A Bluetooth link (via a special Bluetooth battery) allows communication
between the phone and other Bluetooth-enabled devices within a 10 meter range,
such as headsets, computer or PDA devices.
Focus on easy operation
Like all Philips mobile phones, Xenium 9660 offers an outstanding set of
convenience features, making it easy to access its advanced performance and
features. Philips’ award-winning carousel-based user interface uses smart
icons to visually express functions and features of the phone on the 5-line full
graphic display. This user interface concept gives users much easier navigation
of the phone’s features than a conventional, vertically scrolling text menu
with no visual content. Applications and functions can be identified at a
glance, and locating specific features is made much simpler by the easily
recognizable smart icons.
Operation is further simplified by Philips’ latest Voice Command and Voice
Dial capabilities. These enable voice-controlled access to the phone’s menus,
with the ability to place calls to numbers stored in memory, and to select
functions like mobile Internet access, simply by speaking the name of the person
to be dialed or the desired function. Voice Command and Voice Dial further
underline Philips’ leadership position in the application of voice operation
technology, used to make operation both easier and safer. Xenium 9660 also has a
Voice Memo function which allows spoken messages of up to 20 seconds to be
recorded.
Sharing calls with others is made easy by Xenium 9660’s built-in handsfree
function. When this function is selected the phone can be placed on a table so
that friends and colleagues can join in the conversation. This useful function
allows calls to be managed at work, while using a PC, without the need to hold
the phone constantly.
Further enhanced SMS messaging
A number of valuable features incorporated in Xenium 9660 take SMS text
messaging an important step further in both ease of use and functionality. Text
entry for creating SMS messages and accessing the Internet is greatly simplified
by Xenium 9660’s built-in T9 text input software. This allows text to be
entered quickly and conveniently, allowing users to compose their text messages
with just one key press per letter instead of the conventional ‘multi-tap’
procedure. A choice of 10 predefined messages makes writing even faster and
easier. SMS functionality is further increased by the ability to send longer
messages with Xenium 9660, by joining together up to 5 short text messages.
Text messages can be enhanced with Philips’ exclusive 50 SMS ‘emotion icons’,
which add an extra visual dimension to users’ messages. These icons are
received by other owners of compatible Philips mobile phones as expressive
images conveying a range of easily recognizable emotions. It is even possible to
attach a melody to an SMS message, which is played when the message is read by
the recipient, if receiving it on a Philips compatible phone.
Strong entertainment element
Next to its advanced communication facilities, Xenium 9660 also offers consumers
a choice of attractive extra functions to make using their mobile phone an
entertaining experience. For example the built-in melody editor allows users to
create and store up to five of their own, personal ringer melodies. Additional
ringer melodies, together with a selection of entertaining games, can be
downloaded over the air from the Philips or operators’ websites. Further
possibilities for users to personalize the Xenium 9660 include an equalizer to
optimize sound reproduction quality.
Valuable organizer functions
Adding an extra dimension to the standard phonebook function, Xenium 9660 has a
smart phonebook. For each of up to 300 stored names, a range of additional
information can be stored including first names, 5 phone numbers, an e-mail
address and a note. The personal organizer agenda function allows planned
meetings and other important information to be stored and retrieved
conveniently, with an alarm function to provide a reminder if required.
Xenium 9660 has an elegant, professional design with an electro-luminescent blue
backlit display, and is finished in a choice of colours.
