Prov-Tel

Prov-Tel is an umbrella organisation formed specifically to take NextCom into the provinces and into the rural areas and towns where empowerment has still not penetrated.

It represents a group of South Africans who have never previously been involved in any major empowerment or ownership exercise. Its members are small and medium sized businesses, rural development groups and provincial women’s groups from each of the country’s nine provinces. The Prov-Tel structure will create employment and business opportunities across the country during the roll out of the network.


Women in Telecommunications

Women in Telecommunications was formed to ensure the participation of women in a predominantly male dominated sector. The members that form the WIT group represent a broad range of women’s and business interests. Members include: Nozala, Envision, Khomanani and Akwaba.


Aconet

Aconet is a youth and business investment organisation made up of nine separate groups who have come together to join NextCom.


Maluti Telecommunications

Maluti Telecommunications is a local and independent telecommunication consulting firm that has been providing services on reform options and policy issues. Key members of the Maluti Telecommunications team including Bushy Kelobonye have been seconded to the NextCom team to help with the bid.


Union Alliance Media

UAM represents the investment interests of over two million South Africa workers from 12 Cosatu affiliated unions. UAM recently listed on the JSE.




The NextCom consortium Partners

The team has been working hard with a number of companies to make this licence a reality. NextCom has built up a dedicated project team that has provided us with the expertise and support needed to ensure NextCom is successful in its bid.

Nortel Networks

Nortel Networks is a leading global provider of unified networks. It works with customers to design build and deliver telephony networks. Nortel Networks is NextCom’s strategic technology partner and will be one of two infrastructure suppliers the consortium will work with.

Standard Corporate Merchant Bank

Standard Corporate Merchant Bank has been appointed as the group’s financial advisors and lead financial arrangers. They will help in the preparation of the bid and assist the consortium in the selection of strategic partners.

Contactica

Contactica is a team of highly experienced senior consultants specialising in the telecommunications industry. They are an international consultancy and part of the Arthur D Little Consulting Group. Contactica has had extensive international experience in cellular licence bid preparation. They have been involved in telecommunications projects across the world including Tokyo, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, the US and most of Europe. Every single consultant at Contactica has built and operated a network at senior technical and operational level. The group has been involved in eight successful licence bids.

CSIR

CSIR will be assisting with the radio planning.

ETDE

ETDE is part of the French Telecommunications group Bouygones. They will be supporting NextCom with the rollout of the network.


The Management Team

The consortium will be driven by a management team that includes three of the most experienced black telecommunications’ professionals in South Africa.

Sello Matsabu, NextCom’s Chairman has had over 21 years of IT and telecommunications experience having worked for IBM, both here and in the US. Matsabu was also the country manager for Motorola South Africa and previously worked for Telkom.

Bushy Kelobonye, CEO of NextCom was previously involved in the telecommunications policy formulation through his work with the CDITP. Prior to that, Kelobonye was the technology manager at Computer Alliance and since then, has consulted extensively for Ericsson, Nortel, and Millicom.

James Nazo the Bid Manager has worked with Philips Communications and with the networking division of IBM. Nazo has also been involved in the telecommunications policy formulation through his work with the CDITP and the National Telecommunications Forum. Nazo has 15 years of IT and Telecommunications experience behind him.

Both Kelobonye and Nazo have been instrumental in shaping the regulatory framework that governs the third cellular licence bid.
