Sharp has become Japan’s number one mobile phone manufacturer, says the MM Research Institute.

This follows NTT DoCoMo awarding it a major handset supply contract and others from Vodafone KK & KDDI.

Up to 31 March 2006 Sharp increased its shipments by 20% to 7.6 million - a market share of 16.3% out of a total 46.3 million units sold.

Matsushita took second place with 16.1%, although annual shipments dipped 1.8% to 7.5 million.

NEC, which held the number one spot for four consecutive years, came in a lowly third in 2005/06, as its shipments fell 10.6% and its market share dropped to 15.8%.
