As part of its multi-bearer data
strategy, MTN South Africa will launch High Speed Downlink Packet Access
(HSDPA) or 3G Evolved services in June 2006, following closely on
Vodacoms April launch. A pilot call was made on 29 November 2005. It
will initially launch in Gauteng.
It currently offers GPRS, GPRS+, EDGE and
3G/UMTS.
Currently in excess of 30% of MTN's sites
offer EDGE and over 800,000 handsets are in circulation. MTN's 3G
network currently offers data speeds of up to 384 kb using the Sierra
Wireless AC850 datacard.
