MTN South Africa set to Launch HSDPA 3G Mobile Access

As part of its multi-bearer data strategy, MTN South Africa will launch High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) or 3G Evolved services in June 2006, following closely on Vodacoms April launch. A pilot call was made on 29 November 2005. It will initially launch in Gauteng.

It currently offers GPRS, GPRS+, EDGE and 3G/UMTS.

Currently in excess of 30% of MTN's sites offer EDGE and over 800,000 handsets are in circulation. MTN's 3G network currently offers data speeds of up to 384 kb using the Sierra Wireless AC850 datacard.
