3G Americas, a wireless trade organization for the promotion and facilitation
of the successful deployment of the GSM family of technologies and The
Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL) of the Organization of
American States, an organization working for the continuous development of
telecommunications in the Western Hemisphere, announced a cooperative agreement
to further the harmonious development of telecommunications in the Americas. This new cooperation agreement expands on 3G Americas' involvement as a CITEL
Associate Member since July 2002. The collaborative relationship between 3G Americas and CITEL will focus on
diverse cooperation areas of common interests within the scope of both
organizations' objectives such as wireless technologies, services and
applications, spectrum policies and planning, regulation, use of wireless
technologies to support social and economic development, rural utility services,
fixed wireless access services, and universal services especially in developing
countries. CITEL Executive Secretary, Clovis Baptista, noted that there are numerous
mutual interest telecommunications issues for CITEL and 3G Americas in the
wireless sector. Baptista stated, "There are key opportunities in the Western
Hemisphere's growing wireless market that need to be addressed, especially in
developing countries. CITEL will work with 3G Americas by exchanging information
and making the best use of available resources for various important projects
and activities." Chris Pearson, 3G Americas' President, commented, "Expanding our working
relationship with CITEL is important to 3G Americas' efforts to facilitate the
seamless deployment of GSM wireless technologies throughout the region for the
benefit of all citizens in the Western Hemisphere." He continued, "Wireless
customers and the wireless industry as a whole benefit from our two
organizations working together to adopt sound policies that benefit the social
and economic development in the region."
