A Code of Practice for location services used in the UK has been announced and includes passive location services, say reports. It will abide by UK Privacy Laws.

the CoP aims to offers protection to users of the new services and other owners of mobile handsets. The types of safeguards specified include the need for consent, text message reminders for locatees and an easy way to terminate the service.

Extensive consultation has also taken place with children's charities, industry participants, the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers. The Code of practice provides a framework within which location based services can be delivered safely and securely. It will come into force on 1 January 2005.
