Siemens Mobile today announced that it successfully placed one of the
first Internet Protocol-based (IP) Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) phone calls on
a live GSM network in the United States.
This mobile milestone was accomplished using advanced wireless network
infrastructure technology from Siemens, known as IMS@vantage, to deliver
instant messaging, interactive mobile gaming, friend list/network presence
detection, video telephony, Push and Talk over Cellular (PoC), and a variety
of other advanced multimedia services.
One of the most attractive features of IMS is that it allows a smooth
evolution to third generation (3G) network infrastructure. Network operators
with 2.5G infrastructure can take the first step to 3G by deploying IMS,
thereby enabling a suite of multimedia and multi-session applications.
For example, IMS allows several Internet Protocol (IP) media
streams in one session, enabling the integration of a voice call and an
interactive gaming experience on a mobile device at the same time.
The IMS platform is technology agnostic, allowing easy interoperability
with a variety of technology platforms including GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WLAN, CDMA/1X
and UMTS.
To further demonstrate its wide array of network infrastructure technology,
Siemens recently introduced its Wireless Solutions Showcase laboratory in
its Boca Raton, Florida facility.
This laboratory combines a dedicated development and support team with a
standards-compliant service delivery ecosystem, which, for example, enables
IMS/SIP, messaging and location-based applications.
