For the first time in Kenya, Safaricom has launched a GSM pre paid
roaming service.
Safaricom has entered into a prepaid roaming agreement with the leading
South African mobile phone service provider Vodacom.
Plans are also underway to progressively enter into similar agreements
with other service providers abroad.
While announcing the new development, Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph
pointed out that prepaid subscribers wishing to take advantage of the new
service would only be required to make a simple change of tariff from their
current tariff package to the new Safaricom traveller tariff.
Said he: “ with prepaid roaming, all our subscribers are now able to
enjoy roaming benefits on their trips abroad with ease.
They will only need to switch to the new Safaricom traveller tariff and
ensure that they top up or carry scratch cards with them while traveling
overseas. With this service, you can also send and receive an SMS!”
Prior to the introduction of the new service, prepaid subscribers leaving
the country were not able to use their phones abroad.
And to cater for incoming tourists, Safaricom Customer Care desks have
been put up at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport international
arrivals terminal.
