The group of i-mode Alliance companies have announced that i-mode users outside Japan exceeded three million at the end of June 2004. This announcement comes just four months after the figure reached two million.

The i-mode subscriber base is expected to continuing growing at a rapid pace, since it is becoming a strong brand in mobile data communications markets worldwide. Services are currently available through eight i-mode operators outside Japan: BASE (Belgium), Bouygues Telecom (France), E-Plus (Germany), Far EasTone Telecommunications Co., Ltd. (Taiwan), KPN Mobile (The Netherlands), Telefonica Moviles Espa񡠨Spain), WIND Telecomunicazioni S.p.A. (Italy), and COSMOTE - Mobile Telecommunications S.A. (Greece).

Australian operator Telstra Corporation Limited will join the i-mode alliance by the end of this year.

i-mode subscribers world wide, including Japan, have now reached 44.7million, making it the most popular mobile internet service in the world. Vodafone claims to have just over 20 million customers using its Vodafone Live service
