At the end of May, the total number of mobile subscribers in Russia exceeded
47 million, or 33 percent of total population, according Pyramid Research.
The company forecasts total mobile revenue for 2004 to exceed USD 9 billion (EUR
7.47 billion) - 1.5 times the revenue generated from the provision of fixed
communications services.
The market is set to grow further; Pyramid are forecasting it to reach a
penetration level of 74 percent by 2009. Among the main issues facing the market
are investment in further regional expansion of the major operators; the need to
improve customer loyalty; reverse the decline of ARPU and MOU; and maintain
strong margins despite declining ARPU.
