LG Electronics (LGE) captured leadership of the global CDMA
phone market for the 3rd quarter 2003
The digital electronics firm rose to the top spot for the first time according
to a survey conducted by US market research agency Strategy Analytics (SA).
In addition, the digital electronics giant has been honoured by its peers after
being selected to receive the 2003 3G CDMA Industry Award for Subscriber
Technology Innovation.
According to the SA survey data, LGE supplied a total of 6 million mobile phones
to the CDMA global market, posting 23% market share. It outperformed its nearest
competitors which supplied 5.1 million units each to capture 19.6% market share.
The figure posted by LGE in the 3rd quarter represents a 1.7 million unit
increase compared to the 2nd quarter and a 62% growth compared to the same
period last year.
'Camera-phones that LGE initially launched on the US market have become
incredibly popular on the global market,' said Mr. M. B. Shin, President, LG
Electronics Middle East and Africa Operations.
During the third quarter 2003, LGE started to actively supply cell phones to
major European GSM operators such as Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile and to the
USA's largest GSM operator, Cingular, thus reaping tremendous additional sales
success in GSM markets. LGE likewise secured stable sales networks in CDMA
markets such as China, India and Brazil helping to lift the Korean giant to the
top spot.
LGE was selected by the CDMA Development Group (CDG) to receive the 2003 3G CDMA
Industry Award for Subscriber Technology Innovation in recognition of its
innovative CDMA2000 handsets.
"It is particularly gratifying to be honoured by our peers, colleagues and
members of the wireless industry media and analyst communities," said Shin. "The
award is testament to the dedication and creative talents of the LG Mobile
Phones team and their hard work in making LG a driving force in the industry."
LGE's commitment to the advancement of 3G CDMA2000 technology was applauded by
Perry LaForge Executive Director, CDG.
"We congratulate LG Mobile Phones for its continued innovation in offering
consumers state-of-the-art CDMA devices," LaForge commented. "The CDMA community
continues to lead the 3G market and we applaud LG Mobile Phones for its
commitment to the advancement of 3G CDMA2000."
