1 billion GSM users in 2004  - GSM Association

There will be 1 billion GSM subscribers in early 2004 compared to over 900 million at present, according to the GSM Association, which said that Asia will be the major growth driver.

The association said it would be more active in the expansion of 3GSM, the latest version of 3G multimedia mobile technology, in Asia in 2004.

GSM's world market share is projected to reach 80% in 2007 compared to 72% at present.

There are current 370 million GSM users in Asia, or 41% of the global total. GSM has a 95% market share in China and Thailand.

Between 40 and 50 operators are expected to launch 3GSM in 2004. Around 85% of the world's network operators chose the 3GSM standard to develop 3G services.
