British Telecom, former owner of O2 UK, has opted to re-enter the mobile market with a dual-mode solution, dubbed the BT Mobile Home.

The telco will offer a bluephone handset - provided by Sony Ericsson - which will operate as a normal mobile phone when out of the house, but connect to the landline network through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when at home or when roaming, reducing costs.

BT are claiming that the system will save British households money compared to the cost of running both a mobile phone and a landline, and will be aggressively marketing the solution with a 5 million UKP advertising campaign in the run-up to Christmas.

Although no carrier has yet been decided, BT are apparently in talks with all five UK providers. The package will be offered at over 1000 retailers, including consumer stores such as Argos and mobile shops such as CarphoneWarehouse.

Offering certain perks with the plan, BT are also including free quick calls home while mobile, special offers during the initial period and reduced line rental for additional handsets, as well as a SIM-only option.

Continuing their consumer push, the company has also announced a content service to launch next year, dubbed BT Mobile World. BT Text extends the integration of landline and mobile by offering reduced text-message prices when sent from landlines.

Although these announcements are targeted at consumers, businesses are perhaps the market who would be most interested in both VoIP and the savings that a one-phone system could introduce.
