REPORT SYNOPSIS This survey has tracked and analysed Wi-Fi public access service tariffing across Europe and eastern Europe and, as of the end of December 2003, includes 96 service providers in 19 countries. It reveals that Wi-Fi tariffs are converging on more standardised products and tariff structures are showing early signs of commoditising. Retail prices in Europe remain higher than in the US for example, but Service Providers surveyed show that they are increasingly shifting positions to similar tariff categories based on a need to establish subscription based customers, and longer term business revenues. At the same time a high level of pricing experimentation continues. A detailed evaluation of tariffs is provided – together with tariff tables for each Service Provider – and the report benchmarks average pricing across each tariff category. It also draws on a similar survey conducted in January 2003 to identify pricing trends and changes that have occurred across the year. The report also assessed hotspot deployment and found that around 71% of hotspots reside in only 5 countries in Europe. Although most countries fall below the benchmark calculated, the report suggests a more direct relationship between pricing and deployment now exists than has hitherto been evident. Summarising the key trends in pricing, the report is an invaluable resource for all players, regulators, consultants and observers of the Wi-Fi market evolution in Europe, the report is the first in-depth assessment of pricing trends and tariff structures for service offerings in the sector for the region.
