China starts TD-SCDMA mobile trials

12 Dec 2003

The Chinese newspaper, People's Daily says that the worlds first TD-SCDMA handset has begun trials on a 3G network.

The handset is also China's first totally home built handset that did not use any imported components.

Professor Zhen Jianhong, in charge of the development project sponsored by the Chongqing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, said the phone was developed independently with all the intellectual property rights.

Datang Telecom has set up an experimental network for TD-SCDMA mobile phones in Jiangbei District in Chongqing, southwest China, where the trials are now taking place.
