Assembly Warns MTN & Econet Over Inefficient Services

October 10, 2003

GSM service providers in Kano State particularly MTN and Econet have been warned to improve on their services or face the wrath of the law.

The Kano State House of Assembly issued the warning on Tuesday, stating that strict measures would be taken over the two GSM service providers if they refuse to improve their services in the state.

The House took its stand on this issue after a motion was moved by a house member representing Nasarawa constituency Alhaji Sani Ibrahim Ahmed which was seconded by his counterpart of Ungogo constituency, Alhaji Abdullahi Lawal Ardeni.

While moving the motion, Alhaji Sani pointed out that despite the high tariff charge by these GSM service providers, their services was not as effective as it should be, a behaviour which he described as cheating on the GSM users.

He added that it is the duty of the House to ensure the welfare of people of Kano in all aspects of life therefore, the House would not fold its hands and watch the situation without taking necessary measures.

It would be recalled that Kano State environmental planning and protection Agency (KASEPPA) has recently warned the two GSM services providers MTN and Econet to stop illegal installation of their masts in the state.

Areas where the illegal masts were installed and attracted serious concern of KASEPPA include, Badawa (MTN & Econet) Na'ibawa pipeline (MTN), Tukuntawa by FM Radio Station (MTN) Audu Gama-Tudu (MTN) and Dawanau (MTN).

Other areas were Bachirawa (Econet) Kofar-Ruwa (Econet) Gwammaja (MTN) intercellular) Kabuga (MTN) Kura town, Emirs palace road and Kurmi market all (MTN). Residents of those above mentioned areas complained to KASEPPA about the illegal installation which was described as great threat to their health by KASEPPA
