Cell phones used to locate Hot-Spots

Oct 13 2003

The Wi-Fi Alliance has launched a cell phone service that enables users to use a WAP browser to locate their nearest Wi-Fi Hot Spot access points.

Selecting this WAP site will take the users through menus for country, state and then to a list of Wi-Fi ZONE locations in the city selected. Once the users are online at a Wi-Fi ZONE Web site, they can even download the list of locations in the city they are visiting. Both of these tools are something that travel agents and corporate travel managers may find useful to share with the people that they support.

Membership in the Wi-Fi ZONE program is free of charge to WLAN providers whose locations use Wi-Fi CERTIFIED equipment.

“This is a very powerful and fun tool to help people stay connected,” said Frank Hanzlik, Managing Director of the Wi-Fi Alliance. “Although the ZONE Finder search engine is very powerful, we often find ourselves without an Internet connection.

Since most of us usually have our phones with us, this is an excellent tool to find the nearest Wi-Fi ZONE,” continued Hanzlik.
