MTN Nigeria, Nigeria’s No. 1 Wireless Operator has Selected Actix’ RLAS Solution to Analyze and Optimize its GSM Network

London – 30 June, 2003 – Actix, the global provider of wireless network and service performance software, has today announced that MTN Nigeria has selected Actix’ Radio Link Analysis solution (RLAS) to optimize and proactively troubleshoot its GSM network. By deploying Actix’ solution, MTN Nigeria’s network will be able to support more subscribers while also providing subscribers with a better quality of service.

Actix’ GSM RLAS will enable MTN Nigeria to gain a more detailed understanding of subscribers’ experiences in terms of network coverage, quality, and accessibility. It will also enable the operator to improve capacity, fine tune network performance and make significant savings in terms of time and resources through the use of Actix’ vendor-independent and standards-based platform. Furthermore, the best practice engineering processes from across the entire organisation can be embedded in a single platform, and time and resources spent on troubleshooting and optimization of existing sites can be reduced by using base station call trace data more effectively.

Abiodun Adeoye, Head of RF/TX Planning and Optimisation for MTN Nigeria said, “We looked at a number of optimization solutions for our GSM network from several vendors. After demonstrations from the vendors and following our own analysis, it became clear that Actix’ RLAS solution was the best choice for MTN Nigeria. The solution provides the ability to do the most in-depth drive test data analysis; of downlink and uplink data, as well as drilling down into layer two and layer three signalling errors. Actix endeavoured to understand our individual challenges in order to help us maximise the use of RLAS, and it is also a very cost effective choice for us.

“Jeff Atkins, CTO of Actix said, “MTN Nigeria is in a rapid growth phase, and in February this year deployed a digital microwave transmission backbone spanning much of the country. By deploying Actix RLAS solution, MTN Nigeria will be able to enhance the quality and capacity of its network and provide a superior quality of service to its subscribers. This underlying technological enhancement not only serves the subscribers, but also progresses the revenue opportunity of MTN Nigeria.”

About Actix
A privately held company founded in 1991, Actix has established an international reputation for developing market-leading network performance software that enables wireless carriers to optimize network and service performance and to better interpret customer behavior, regardless of technology or vendor, using “essential intelligence” from the network. Actix has offices and end users in the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, Asia Pacific and the United States. More than 3,000 engineers from more than 150 leading global operators in 20 countries – including Verizon, Sprint, Nextel, T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone – depend upon Actix everyday to improve their wireless operations. Further Technical Information
The IVS software is the first of its kind to enable WCDMA/UMTS wireless operators to tap into the link between the radio interface and the Packet Data Switch Node (PDSN). This dataset is a particularly rich source of user traffic and signaling, allowing operators to examine throughput and quality statistics that are not available from call and packet detail records, peg counters, and other standard network data. With these new metrics, operators can solve more detailed network performance problems by drilling further into the lower-level signaling or protocol data. In addition, operators can synchronize core network measurements with over-the-air drive tests and call trace measurements to gain an end-to-end view of network performance.
