Aug 12 2003

The Chinese newspaper, South Daily has reported that Nokia, Motorola, Bird, TCL and Siemens have ranked the top five mobile phone sellers in China in the first half of 2003.

During the first half, Chinese factories produced 82 million handsets, and sold 80 million according to data from the Ministry of Information Industry.

Of the handsets sold, nearly half, or 37 million, were exported to other countries and areas.

At the end of last year, China had a handset production capacity of 200 million handsets per year, although the local market is expected to absorb just 60 million of those handsets, leaving an export requirement of 140 million units. 37 companies have licenses to manufacture cell phone handsets.
