Report on Chinas top5 handset manufacturers
The Chinese newspaper, South Daily has reported that Nokia,
Motorola, Bird, TCL and Siemens have ranked the top five mobile phone
sellers in China in the first half of 2003. During the first half, Chinese factories produced 82 million handsets,
and sold 80 million according to data from the Ministry of Information
Industry. Of the handsets sold, nearly half, or 37 million, were exported to other
countries and areas.

At the end of last year, China had a handset production capacity of 200
million handsets per year, although the local market is expected to absorb
just 60 million of those handsets, leaving an export requirement of 140
million units. 37 companies have licenses to manufacture cell phone
handsets.
