Following several incidents where non-original mobile phone batteries have
overheated and
caused damage, Nokia now warns its customers to stay away from such batteries.
Non-original mobile phone batteries are popular with mobile phone users who seek
to replace worn down original batteries, since most of them promise to not only
last longer but also cost less than originals. According to Nokia, however,
several incidents over the course of the past few months have shown that
non-original batteries could overheat and cause damage both to the batteries and
the phone.
Finding the problems severe enough to issue a security warning, Nokia is now
advising customers in the European, African and Asian regions to avoid the use
of non-original batteries in Nokia phones due to the possible consequences.
In addition, the manufacturer is advising users of the possibility that using
non-original mobile phone chargers could increase the risk of battery
malfunction.
Claiming the warning is being issued to raise awareness amongst consumers, there
is little doubt that Nokia would also prefer seeing sales of its original
batteries increase, particularly since non-original batteries rank very high on
the list of popular mobile phone accessories. An ongoing investigation by Nokia
of various non-original batteries manufactured by different entities, obtained
in a number of regions, has according to the manufacturer produced results that
should further discern users from using such batteries.
So
far, said
Nokia, the non-original batteries it had been able to obtain appear not to fulfill the
safety and quality requirements Nokia applies to batteries of its own making
