Location-based services take one more step towards becoming reality as
Nokia and Radiolinja successfully demonstrate positioning capabilities in
Radiolinja's WCDMA network.
Nokia and Radiolinja, a Finnish mobile operator, on Monday announced that
the two companies have successfully demonstrated Service Area Identity (SAI)
positioning technology as part of the Nokia mPosition solution.
The field trials were carried out using Radiolinja's pre-commercial WCDMA
network, and the companies said they achieved good results in accurately
determining a user's position within the range of a single network cell.
Trials of the technology were carried out in a combined urban and suburban
area in Tampere, with most tests being carried out in a moving vehicle.
Service Area Identity is a position technology used in WCDMA networks to
determine the physical location of a mobile subscriber, thus enabling
location-relevant services.
For carriers, Nokia says deployment of SAI positioning can be made with
minimum additional network investment because the GSM and WCDMA network
architectures can use the same positioning calculation and Gateway Mobile
Location servers.
Also, customers need not buy new handsets to make use of the technology,
since all calculations to determine a subscriber's position are
