A study performed by E.M. Solutions in The Netherlands has revealed that
information exchange by using WiFi is far from save. Chris Dee from E.M.
Solutions said at a conference that investigations done in Amsterdam,
Rotterdam and The Hague showed that information was quite easy to retrieve
from computers using the wireless network.
E.M. Solutions succeeded in breaking in the networks
of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, a major hospital in Rotterdam and lots
of offices located in Amsterdam. This was done by using a laptop in a car
stationed outside these buildings. According to Chris Dee the main problem
is the lack of interest in securing information. Passwords are easily
retrievable and encryptions easy to decode.
Especially employees who use their company laptops at home
who use WiFi to connect to the internet and from there on to their office
are vulnerable. Not only the possibility of retrieving information is a risk
but also manipulation of data and the introducing of a computer virus.
E.M. Solutions concluded hat two third of all companies
using WiFi are lagging behind in security.
Chris Dee noted all this as a major problem that could do
much harm not only to the companies involved but to the deployment of WiFi
as well.
