MMS Revenues to reach $8.3bn by 2004

2003-01-15

Juniper Research interviewed over 40 industry leaders and concluded that MMS has the potential to generate revenues in excess of $8.3bn by 2004 . . . but with the proviso that operators must meet a number of key challenges:

- Firstly, Operators must hurry to implement cross-network MMS and roaming facilities, in order to allow the market to reach the necessary critical mass of enabled users.

- Secondly, Operators must quickly make available MMS enabled handsets and cameras that are affordable and user-friendly; in order to open up the mass market (with a particular emphasis on Youth).

In addition the Juniper study found that by 2004 much of the revenue for MMS will be generated via content delivery and provisioning, at $5.6bn, rather than pure peer-to-peer messaging, at $2.7bn.

2004
------
$2.7bn -> Peer-to-Peer Revenues
$5.6bn -> Server to Mobile Revenues
$8.3bn -> Total

Messaging
Charles Lafage, Senior Analyst at Juniper Research, and MMS specialist comments: "Picture-messaging has a great potential as it satisfies a widespread customer need: to share the precious (and not so precious) moments of our everyday lives. However, there is much more to MMS than picture-messaging. MMS enables a wide range of mobile information and entertainment services, that will generate twice as much revenue as Peer-to-Peer messaging. MMS can deliver where WAP failed: easy to access to content and services over mobile networks and a revenue opportunity for operators and third party providers."

Content
Juniper Research expects information and applications to generate $5.6bn in revenues by 2004, two-thirds of which will go to third parties. The most successful services will be those that truly take advantage of the multimedia platform and the "anytime, anywhere" nature of the technology - offering a unique proposition to the end-user.

This applies to business users as well. MMS can readily act as a mobile extension of the corporate messaging and business applications environment. Business alone will account for $1.4bn of revenue in 2004.
