The South African Post Office has launched the Trust
Centre outside Cape Town, allowing it to start issuing legally recognised
digital signatures on smart cards in 2003.
It allows the SAPO to act as an authentication service provider
able to issue digital signatures recognised by
the Electronic Communications and Transactions (ECT) Act
signed into law in July.
Only advanced signatures can legally replace handwritten signatures where
law requires a traditional signature.
The Post Office was also responsible for the requirement for face-to-face
authentication when advanced digital signatures are issued.
