Japan’s second largest mobile operator, KDDI, has announced the number of users for its 3G mobile phone service has reached four million.

The operator is well on its way to attracting seven million 3G subscribers by March 31, a target set by President Tadashi Onodera last week.

KDDI launched its 3G service in April of this year, based on the CDMA2000 standard. Qualcomm developed the CDMA2000 standard, which is proving to be the more popular standard.

NTT DoCoMo launched its service on the competing WCDMA format, but has yet to amass 150,000 users.
