US Customs Agents Intercept Cell Phones Being Sent to al Qaeda Network

September 16 2002

In a major breakthrough, U.S. Customs agents intercepted a cache of 250 cell phones that were to be shipped to the al Qaeda network, said John Babb, U.S. Customs director.

The shipment contained digital GSM and satellite phones,  the same types used to plan the Sep 11 2001 terror attacks against the USA.

The phones were discovered at the Port of Houston and had been ordered from a legitimate company, but the company to which they were to be sent was found to be illegitimate, the customs director said.

The US government is continuing to investigate.
