China's SMS Explosion

20 8 2002

China has been a bit slow to embrace SMS, but what it lacks for in speed it more than makes up for in volume. In 2001, China’s SMS and value-added services (VAS) revenues totaled $234 million; this year, revenues will triple to $750 million (compared with $204 million for the UK).

And that's just for starters.

By 2007, SMS revenues will jump to $16 billion, driven by the more than 500 million mobile subscribers sending, on average, six messages per day (1.2 trillion in all). Put into perspective, in 2007 China will generate greater SMS revenues than all of Western Europe combined.
