A small California company said this week that it has developed technology that uses Bluetooth to create ad hoc networks in which users can automatically exchange text messages.
Inventop Software said that its ProximityMail uses Bluetooth to create a spontaneous "Relay Area Network" (RAN) in which users can exchange text messages without knowing the e-mail addresses of mobile phone numbers of the others in the network. The technology is aimed at use by handhelds.
"Our vision is that PDAs will become a powerful communication tool in the very near future," said Virginie Glaenzer, the company's CEO.
The RAN technology, for which the company has applied for patents, extends the effective range of Bluetooth without requiring configuration by the user or any other infrastructure.
It would enable, for instance, a RAN to be created in an airport, according to the company. The company said the only requirement is that users must have the ProximityMail application installed on their devices.
Glaenzer said that "several companies" have said they will integrate the technology into their products, but did not name the companies.
Nor did the company say when the technology would be widely available.
