VIENNA, Austria Nov. 23, 1999

The first mobile data transfer trials over GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) in Austria have been completed by Motorola's Network Solutions Sector (NSS) and Mobilkom, Austria's main mobile communications network operator.

Following the successful completion of the trials, Mobilkom will integrate GPRS into the existing GSM network, with commercial operation expected by summer 2000.

The data transfer over GPRS, the first in Austria, took place on 23 November in the Viennese Arsenal, Mobilkom's Viennese regional subsidiary. The demonstration highlighted the next stage of mobile communications - data on the move - showing the capability of Motorola's GPRS network solution and handset capability in the new Internet Protocol (IP)-based packet-switched mobile world.

Mobilkom's commercial GPRS service will be a high-speed packet data transport service offered over the GSM network. It allows subscribers to send and receive information in the form of 'packets' over a virtual permanent connection.

Ernst Tallowitz, Director of the Board of Mobilkom Austria, said: ``This GPRS trial stresses Mobilkom Austria's status as a technology leader in Austria. The introduction of GPRS will allow mobile phone users to access a new range of services without the use of a fixed terminal -- a truly mobile world.''

Motorola's GPRS trial with Mobilkom began in August with an evaluation in Motorola's laboratories in Swindon, UK. In September the GPRS system transferred to Vienna and trials continued in cooperation with Mobilkom.

Early next year, a field trial is planned in Wiener Neustadt, an area south of Vienna. Part of the city will be equipped with GPRS base stations, providing an end-to-end GPRS network for ``friendly users''.

``We are very proud that Mobilkom Austria, the country's leading network operator, has been supported by Motorola's technology for more than 10 years. Motorola implemented Mobilkom's analogue network (D-Net) in 1990 and has supplied GSM infrastructure solutions since 1992 to Mobilkom's A1 network, which operates at both 900 and 1800MHz,'' said Ted Hally, Motorola corporate vice president and general manager of the GSM Systems Division.

``This new packet-switched GPRS technology represents the new generation of mobile communications, moving towards the multimedia capacity of third generation UMTS, and we are delighted to be continuing our relationship with Mobilkom into this new, exciting, Internet access arena.''
