16 June 1999
In accordance with the Kenya Communications Act of 1998 and the Ministry of Transport and Communications' 1999 Postal and Telecommunications Sector Policy Statement, the Government of Kenya wishes to secure the provision in Kenya of a second GSM network in order to stimulate competition and encourage expansion of the sector.
Final award of the tender to the successful bidder is expected to be in February, 2000.
Deadline for submission of bid pre-qualifications is July 20, 1999, at 2:00pm local time.
The Kenyan market for cellular communications is growing at the present time.
This is due to the lack of adequate land line infrastructure and the falling of cost of cellular communications.
Also, Kenya is the largest telecom market in the region and all of the major cellular phone equipment manufacturers have a presence there.
