Who launches satellites? |
The Arianespace consortium of Europe is preparing to introduce its
Ariane 5 for commercial use. Lockheed Martin obtained the Atlas rocket line through its
acquisition of General Dynamics. Boeing is preparing to introduce the Delta 3 to correct
its incompatibility problems with current commercial satellites. China Great Wall Industries' Long March series has conducted more
than 50 liftoffs. International Launch Systems, a venture led by Lockheed Martin, markets
the Proton rocket in the West. In its four-stage version, Proton can launch a satellite
straight into geosynchronous orbit. At its Russian launch facilities, Soyuz rockets can send off
astronauts and conduct satellite deployments to geosynchronous orbits.
Boeing's Sea Launch
venture, using the Ukrainian Zenit launcher, has a semisubmersible converted oil platform
that functions as the launch pad.
The majority of full-sized satellite deployments to geosynchronous orbit are conducted by
seven launch vehicles.
