Mobile Data is BIG,
worth over US$60 billion in 2004 And it's growing fast. There are now a numbers of facilities for transmitting data, fax and SMS over GSM cellular, CDMA, Packet Radio and Satellite.  Speeds will be boosted by transmission techniques like the new 114kbps GPRS GSM Packet Data specification, and then following that EDGE 384 kbps data over GSM . Today's commercially available chipsets for data and fax are limited in speed and functionality, but are evolving into high-speed versions that will eventually handle data speeds of up to 2 Mbps (UMTS). Exciting short-range wireless connectivity facilities like Bluetooth
will replace InfraRed (IrDa) to simplify connections between, for example,
digital phones to computing devices, transmitting and receiving Internet data
via high-speed GSM and/or CDMA SmartPhones using
new techniques like SIM Toolkit and Wireless
Application Protocol, or (WAP). Speeds
will be boosted by transmission techniques like the new 114kbps
GPRS GSM Data specification.
