Global Mobile Data Guide |
|
Mobile Data is BIG,
worth over US$60 billion in 2004 And it's growing fast. There are now a numbers of facilities for transmitting data, fax and SMS over GSM cellular, CDMA, Packet Radio and Satellite. ![]() Speeds will be boosted by transmission techniques like the new 114kbps GPRS GSM Packet Data specification, and then following that EDGE 384 kbps data over GSM . Today's commercially available chipsets for data and fax are limited in speed and functionality, but are evolving into high-speed versions that will eventually handle data speeds of up to 2 Mbps (UMTS). Exciting short-range wireless connectivity facilities like Bluetooth
will replace InfraRed (IrDa) to simplify connections between, for example,
digital phones to computing devices, transmitting and receiving Internet data
via high-speed GSM and/or CDMA SmartPhones using
new techniques like SIM Toolkit and Wireless
Application Protocol, or (WAP). Speeds
will be boosted by transmission techniques like the new 114kbps
GPRS GSM Data specification.
