The huge growth in subscribers and services over public mobile networks has set new challenges of establishing technical and ethical standards for provision of services as well as ensuring compliance with regulations that directly apply to the mobile industry.

 

With the proliferation of Premium SMS (PSMS) players and the potential for some poisoning the well for the vast majority who are legitimate providers, industry associations that represent players in the mobile industry have been formed to meet these challenges

 

In February 2006, the EU Began a European Mobile Phone Roaming Rate Investigation.


 


Mobile Self Regulation
There are two major self-regulatory bodies regulating the mobile industry. There is WASPA, which regulates the industry in South Africa, and ICSTIS which is for UK mobile service providers.

UK -- ICSTIS
ICSTIS is the UK's industry-funded regulatory body for all premium rate charged telecommunications services. It is a non-profit making and comprise 12 remunerated part-time Committee members, supported by a full-time Secretariat. more....

South Africa -- WASPA
The Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (WASPA) was launched on 26 August 2004 in Sandown, Gauteng with the full support of the three network operators: Cell C, MTN and Vodacom. more...
