Iridium Mobile Satellite Phone System Closed Down On March 17 2000

URGENT NOTIFICATION

March 6, 2000

Dear Valued Motorola Customer:

On Monday, March 6, 2000, Iridium LLC was authorized to use cash collateral to continue operations through March 17, 2000. Iridium LLC will continue its efforts to find a qualified buyer.

However, unless a qualified buyer comes forward and provides additional funding by March 15, 2000, we do not expect Iridium service to be available after 11:59 PM (EST) on March 17, 2000.

In the meantime, Motorola will continue its support for Iridium LLC, the gateways, service providers, and all current customers and subscribers.

Motorola is attempting to directly contact all its direct end user customers who subscribe to Iridium service through a Motorola-owned Service Provider as quickly as possible to inform them about the current status of Iridium service availability. However we would appreciate your sharing this information with anyone you know who uses Iridium service.

As you may know, Motorola and other Iridium investors have been working very hard to support Iridium LLC’s efforts to reorganize and continue operating the business.

Motorola cares deeply about its customers, and as a valued customer, we are concerned about your needs. We understand that you probably have a number of questions. We will update this site as we learn more about the situation.

In the event that Iridium service becomes unavailable, we would be happy to talk to you about other possible communications solutions. Additionally, contact information for possible alternative service providers is provided below for your convenience.

Questions other customers are asking

Q: What is Motorola’s role in all this?

Iridium LLC and Motorola are two separate companies. Motorola has a minority interest in Iridium LLC (less than 20%) as an equity investor, and guaranteed some of Iridium LLC’s debt. Since last August, when Iridium LLC filed for court-assisted voluntary reorganization under U.S. bankruptcy law, Iridium LLC has been in discussions with its lenders and creditors regarding plans to restructure its finances. Motorola and other Iridium investors have been working very hard to support Iridium LLC’s efforts to reorganize and continue operating the business. However, the future of Iridium LLC, and the question of whether service will continue after March 17, now rests with the bankruptcy court.

Q: What will happen to the satellites in the event that Iridium service is no longer available?

At this point, it is really is too early to say for certain what will happen to the satellites. They do not belong to Motorola, and like Iridium LLC's other assets, what happens to them is up to the bankruptcy court. However, if a qualified buyer for Iridium doesn't come forward by March 15, we expect that Motorola could be asked (by the court) to begin the process of decommissioning the satellites on behalf of Iridium LLC.

Q: What are my options now that Motorola has advised me of the risk that Iridium service might end? How do I contact another satellite service provider?

Motorola cares deeply about its customers, and as a valued customer, we are concerned about your needs. If you would like information on other products or services that may be able to provide an alternative solution to your communication needs, please find a list of possible alternatives below.

Q: Will other satellite service providers offer similar contracts?

We are unable to comment on the types of contracts other satellite service providers may offer.

Q: Will a new satellite service provider cost the same as Iridium?

Motorola cannot compare alternative satellite service providers to Iridium service. We do not have information on the packages that alternative satellite service providers offer.

Q: Will the service be of the same quality?

Motorola cannot compare alternative satellite service providers to Iridium service.

Q: Will my current equipment function with another satellite service provider?

Motorola satellite communication products built for the Iridium system will not function with other satellite providers

Dual-mode Iridium/GSM mobiles [LEFT] use their nearest satellite as a base station, so bypassing their terrestrial PSTN network.

If for example an Iridium satellite forwards a call to a satellite flying over a GSM-accessible country, calls could be then "dropped-in" using the local GSM network, avoiding the need for complex ground station routing.
