Smart Messaging Agent for Nokia

new_round.gif (1427 bytes)
Smart Messaging Agent (NSMA) allows you to send smart messages (like group graphics and operator logos) to your Nokia 61xx phone. It allows you to place your favourite BMP image file on your 61xx phone screen by sending the phone an SMS instead of a transferring it by cable or infrared connection.

Software Requirements

redarrow-tn.gif (64 bytes) Nokia 61xx phone (51xx won't work with this software!) to receive SMS messages
redarrow-tn.gif (64 bytes) Windows 95/98 or NT
redarrow-tn.gif (64 bytes) SMSC that supports 8 bits
redarrow-tn.gif (64 bytes) GSM PC Card Modem or a SoftModem that accepts AT SMS commands
redarrow-tn.gif (64 bytes) Group graphics and operator logos to send to the Nokia 61xx phone

How does the software work?

Most of the mobile carriers provide access to their SMSCs by modem/ISDN. This is done by a terminal connection utilitizing some kind of protocol.

These protocols are TAP and UCP. TAP is a very simple protocol only able to transmit simple text messages of 7 bit width per byte.

UCP is a complex and powerful way to communicate with your carrier´s SMSC, able to transmit 8 bit SMS and the user data header

These are the requirements for smart messages. And they are only met by dial-in supporting the UCP protocol.

Ok, what do I have to do ?

This is quite simple. Just load one of the group graphic files (.NGG) or operator logos (.NOL) made with Thomas Kessler's Group Graphic Editor (you can download it HERE) in the NSMA.

Then setup your modem and the SMSC number of your GSM network and send the message.

F.A.Q.

Q: I´ve called my carrier´s operator and asked them for my carrier´s dial-in access to the SMSC. The gave me a number and I've entered it in the options dialog. But there is no answer on the phone/but there will be always a false number dialed. What´s wrong ?

A: In the options dialog all numbers must be entered in canonical format this means for example for Germany +49 0172 2278000 (country-code + prefix + number). Maybe you´ve entered the number "as is". You can enter the number this way, but you must put a "T" as first character in the number field.

Q: I´ve called my carrier's operator and asked them for my carrier's dial-in access to his SMSC. The gave me a number and I´ve entered it in the options dialog. The modem can establish a connection. But there seems to be no acknowledgement from the SMSC. What's wrong?

A: It seems that you carries dial-in uses the TAP protocol instead of the needed UCP protcol. Please call their operator and ask if UCP is supported.

Q: The connection to the SMSC is established but I always get the message that the SMS could not be transferred. What´s wrong ?

A: There could be many reasons. Mostly the problem is that the called SMSC blocks the number you want the SMS to be transmitted to. In Germany Mannesmann D2 doesn´t allow messages transmitted to E-Plus, D1 Telekom, Viag Interkom although you can transmit messages from your D2 mobile to other networks. If you´re not located in Germany try to use the SMSC of Mannesmann D2. They allow international SMS.

Another reason could be the fact that your carrier´s SMSC supports UCP but not the transmission of 8-bit messages or the user data header. Please call you carrier's operator for more information...
