Vodacom launched a new prepaid tariff option offering the cheapest peak time prepaid rates in South Africa. In addition, Vodacom prepaid customers who are undecided about which tariff option suits them best will be able to change between prepaid tariff plans simply by making one free telephone call.

Vodago SmartStep charges prepaid calls at R2.70 for the first minute and at R1.55 for every minute thereafter anytime of the day or night. Peak time SMS messages on Vodago SmartStep are charged at 75 cents while off-peak SMS messages are charged at 25 cents per message.

"In addition to becoming the first cellular network in South Africa to offer such a low prepaid tariff during peak times, SmartStep expands the range of prepaid options available to cellular users. Vodacom's suite of prepaid tariff options now include Vodago SmartStep, Vodago Standard and 4U, which has the lowest off-peak rate at 90 cents per minute," said Joan Joffe, Group Executive - Corporate Affairs of Vodacom.

Also from 9 December, Vodacom prepaid customers are now able to change between prepaid tariff plans for free once every 30 days simply by calling Vodacom FreeChange on 1181.

There is absolutely no conversion fee - even the call to 1181 is free from a Vodacom cellphone - and customers who change between prepaid tariffs via FreeChange every 30 days will retain any call value or airtime windows
accumulated on their previous prepaid tariff option.

Vodago prepaid customers will be able to change between the Vodago Standard and Vodago SmartStep tariff options and convert to the 4U prepaid option. Conversely, 4U prepaid customers will be able to convert to any
Vodago option.

"Vodacom FreeChange is perfect for the holiday season. For example, a Vodago Standard customer who usually makes peak and off-peak calls throughout the day, may consider switching to 4U prepaid when going on
leave when his calls are likely to be made on the beach and of a shorter duration during off-peak times. Upon returning to work in January, he can change back to Vodago Standard.

"South Africa's cellular industry is becoming one of the most competitive in the world. New products like FreeChange and Vodago SmartStep are all about giving the customer choice and a degree of control never experienced
before," said Ms Joffe.

Prepaid customers currently make up over 80% of Vodacom's customer base of 5,95 million subscribers. "When cellular was launched in South Africa in 1994, nobody would have thought that cellphones would eventually be owned
by such a wide variety of people. Prepaid vouchers have meant that everybody from a corporate banker to a street hawker can own a cellphone," said Ms Joffe.

Vodago Standard is Vodacom's original prepaid offering and would suit people who make calls of varying duration at different times throughout the day. Vodago Standard charges calls at R2.85 during peak times and
R1.55 during off-peak times.

4U Prepaid bills customers in units of 1 second and delivers significant cost savings to cellular users who typically speak for less than one minute at a time. Peak time calls are charged at 6 cents per second while
off-peak calls are charged at 1.5 cents a second - the lowest off-peak rate in South Africa.

Furthermore, per second billing on 4U is applicable from the first second of the customer's call. Vodacom is the only cellular network in South Africa not to begin per second billing after the first minute.

For more information about Vodago SmartStep, customers can call Vodago Customer Care on 114 from a cellphone or 082 114 from a Telkom phone. A call to Customer Care is free if you call from a Vodacom cellphone.
