MTN Services: Data/Fax

MTN supports both Mobile Originating and Mobile Terminating Data & fax Bearer services.

The MO service is called Basic Data Fax & the MO/MT service is called Enhanced Data/Fax. MTN charges additional subscription fees for it's value-added fax and data services.

To activate these fax and data facilities, MTN subscribers must contact their service provider, usually though faxing the request to the SP.

Within 24 hours these facilities should be activated.

If Enhanced Data/fax services is activated, the subscriber will then be provided with additional incoming numbers for the Mobile Terminating (MT) component.

These additional numbers are required for correct operation of the fax and data services.

When a fax is to be sent directly to a subscriber using a special GSM data/fax adapter, the separate incoming fax number must be dialed by the caller. The same procedure applies to data calls. The subscriber's voice-only number remains unchanged.

MTNs fax service operates at an industry-standard 9,600 baud transmission speed, while the modem data services operate at 2,400 baud, 4,800 baud and 9,600 baud transmission speeds.

Separate numbers will therefore be allocated for the incoming fax, and each of the various modem data speeds.

MTN supports Radio Link Protocol (RLP) during Non-Transparent communication.
Transparent communication is also supported.

All data and fax calls made from a cellphones will be charged at air-time rates currently applicable to outgoing voice calls.
