Suekage Sangyo has shown off a new surveillance system, "SOIOS +alpha," that
combines a 360-degree, omni-directional video camera with functionality for
relaying images to a 3G phone. The system's CCD camera takes video images
reflected on a hyperbolic mirror, 55mm in diameter. This omni-directional
optical sensor is called "SOIOS." As its effective angular view, SOIOS has
an ascending angle of 12 degrees and a descending angle of 50 degrees,
measured vertically from the mirror's focal point, over a 360-degree
horizontal field of view.
Live video images are transmitted via IEEE 1394 from the camera to a
personal computer, and from the computer to a server. The live video can be
viewed by accessing a designated URL from the user's computer or mobile
phone.
The newly developed component in SOIOS +alpha is the notification system. On
detection of an intruder, SOIOS +alpha sends an e-mail notice over the
Internet to the user's computer or mobile phone. It also has functionality
to produce a FOMA-compliant video clip of the intruder (approximately 15
seconds long) and send it to a computer or one of Japan's DoCoMo 3G
handsets.
Because the SOIOS omni-directional optical sensor can cover 360 degrees in
one shot, it does not need the drive component required in conventional
surveillance cameras. This makes for a more compact, low-cost system.
According to Suekage, SOIOS systems have already been installed as Webcams
(without a notification system) in kindergartens, where they are used so
that parents at home can keep an eye on their children.
The company hopes to have its SOIOS security system ready for release in
January
